She decided they’re dating for this? I figured you wouldn’t mind working with that. :D]

She was eating ice cream in the middle of February.

She was aware that it was a little strange, but she was in the mood and there was parlor on the way back to her place. Lindsay had never really been one to care about what the general population thought of her anyway, so while she was aware of how odd she looked walking down the streets of New York City, eating an ice cream cone in twenty degree weather next to her shivering Phoenix-born boyfriend, she also knew that it didn’t really matter. This was New York. No one ever paid attention to anything anyone else was doing.

She glanced over at Adam after a minute, before grinning at the look on his face and nudging him lightly with her shoulder. “What? You look like you’ve never seen a girl eating an ice cream cone before.”

Adam ducked his head slightly, one gloved hand coming up to rub the back of his neck. “I’ve never see a girl eating one when it’s below freezing outside,” he said sheepishly. “Aren’t you cold?”

She shook her head as she went back to her ice cream. “Nope.”

They were quiet for a minute as they continued walking, and it wasn’t until she’d dropped the last of the cone into her mouth and her bare hands were tucked back away in her pockets to keep warm that she spoke again, linking her left arm through his as that hand slid into the pocket. “Are you okay, Adam?” She knew the last case had gotten to him—that he empathized with the kid, and he knew where he was coming from. But as far as she could see, he hadn’t really talked about it, and that bothered her a bit.

“Me?” Adam said, flashing her another small smile, but this one wasn’t as steady as the one he’d given her before. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”

“I just—I know the last case got to you a bit, that’s all,” she said with a nod. “Just wanted to make sure.”

“No, no—I’m fine.” He was quiet for a moment, slowing his foot steps slightly as they got to her building, and waiting until they’d come to a stop and she was turning to face him to actually finish the sentence. “I just—I was really hoping it wasn’t him, ya know?”

“Yeah,” Lindsay nodded, having seen cases like that on more than one occasion, and knowing that feeling exactly. “Yeah, I know.” She gave him a small smile, the corner of her mouth turning up just slightly, before glancing back at the doorway to her building. “Want to come up and warm up a bit?”

From her tone he could tell that his mind was more than welcome to infer whatever it wanted about ‘warming up’ and Adam froze for a moment, stammering a bit before actually responding. “I shouldn’t, I, uh—I mean, we’ve got work tomorrow, and I don’t want to—”

“Adam,” she said slowly, pulling her hands out of his pockets and playing with the lapel of his jacket slightly. “We’ve been dating a while now. Usually a girl doesn’t have to work this hard to get her boyfriend to come up to her apartment.”

“Yeah, well,” he began sheepishly, looking down at her as she did, “I guess I just don’t wanna disappoint.”

Lindsay’s eyebrows went up slightly at that, and she frowned. “And what makes you think you’ll disappoint me?”

He paused for a moment, watching her carefully as he did. “I do have pretty big shoes to fill.” Lindsay looked at him for a minute, confused, before giving him a look.

“If you mean Danny? I’m not about to start comparing you to him.” Adam raised an eyebrow at her, and she rolled her eyes a bit. “First of all—he’s not as good as everybody thinks he is. Second of all—I’m much happier now than I ever was with him. I like to think that counts for something.”

“I know. I know, but—”

Lindsay leaned forward, pushing herself up on her toes just enough so that she could kiss him. She held it for a moment, and it wasn’t long before she felt his arms slide around her waist, pulling her in closer and she sighed happily into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck and letting it continue until one of them pulled back for air. She kept her eyes closed for a moment, enjoying the closeness, before speaking up again.

“Come upstairs, Adam.”

He paused for a moment, letting his forehead rest against hers, before nodding. “Okay.”

***

Once it was all over, she curled up closer to him, feeling languid and lazy. They were just tangled in a mess of blankets and sheets, wrapped up tightly in each other and she was just—happy. She hadn’t felt that way in a long, long time, and she was more than happy to feel it again. It was a few minutes before she felt him shift next to her, and she opened her eyes slowly, looking at him in confusion.

“I should probably go,” he said, kissing the top of her head slightly, and she shook her head slowly, pulling him in closer and just getting comfortable.

“Way too cold outside.”

889 words

I think this turned more into Cohort!Lindsay than Flirty!Lindsay, but there was a bit of flirting! Relevant to THIS post.]

She hated coming to him like this.

Firstly, it was unprofessional. She shouldn’t be using the lab’s equipment for something so trivial as to who stole her lunch. Regardless of the fact that she already had a distinct feeling of who it was, she still shouldn’t be using lab equipment to get her evidence. She should just be letting it go, going out and buying herself a new lunch.

Regardless of the fact that this wasn’t the first time her lunch had been stolen, and that she was not amused that it was happening yet again.

Secondly, it was even more unprofessional that she was dragging Adam into this. He hadn’t asked to be involved and he certainly wasn’t the one who stole her lunch. He didn’t need to be involved in her unprofessional behavior any more than Lindsay did, but she needed answers, and he was the person involved in the trace lab. And he wouldn’t tip off the suspect—or so she hoped.

Making her way into the trace lab, she gave him a bright smile, brown bag in hand. She leaned forward on the opposite side of the table and just tilted her head to the side slightly, watching him as he processed the evidence in front of him, ear buds in his ear, and not paying all that much attention to what was going on around him. She waited for a minute, watching him work before speaking up slightly.

“Hey, Adam.”

He jumped slightly at that, glancing up and wondering where the sudden sound had come from, but when he realized it was Lindsay, he relaxed slightly, giving her his usual awkward smile as he pulled the ear buds out. “Hey, Lindsay. What can I do for you?”

She bit her lip slightly, the awkwardness of what she was about to ask him setting in. “I was wondering if you could run something for me—off the books.”

“Off the books?” he began, raising an eyebrow, slightly confused. “Off the books how?” She started to hold up the brown paper bag and pushed it over to him. “I need prints. It’s not relevant to any case, so take your time with it, but as soon as you get the chance—”

“No problem,” Adam said with a nod as he took the bag from her. He bagged it and placed it on his to-do pile before turning back to her with a stronger smile. “Someone steal your lunch again.”

“Yeah,” she said with a sigh. “I really want to bust the guy—just so I don’t have to deal with it anymore.”

“Not a problem,” Adam nodded. “Maybe you should just write your name on it in big letters—that way he or she can’t possibly miss it.”

She laughed slightly at that, before giving him a nod. “I’ll try that next time. Get back to me as soon as it’s done?”

“Not a problem.”

***

Lindsay was sitting in the break room the next day, taking a coffee break from the evidence she was processing, when Adam came in, folder in hand. He gave her a small smile, before sitting down and sliding the folder over to her.

“I got the results back on that thing you wanted me to run—” he began, and she perked up slightly at that, taking the folder from him as she flipped it open. When she spotted the name on top of the file she grinned, shaking her head slightly as she did.

“I knew it.”

“Yeah, well, I thought it was kind of obvious,” Adam said with a sigh. “Food goes missing around here, it’s likely that Flack was on the other end of it.”

“You do want to be sure, before you go and confront someone, anyway,” she sighed. “Knowing my luck, it might have been the one time he actually didn’t.” She turned to Adam for a minute, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek before getting up and heading out of the room. “Thanks again, Adam.”

Adam blushed slightly, before shouting after her as she went. “You’re—you’re welcome, Lindsay.”

687 words
